45th Reunion Planning Update
March 18, 2010

Hi,!

----- Reunion Planning Committee Meeting March 18 -----

Reunion dates are 24, 25 and 26 September 2010.

----- FRIDAY, September 24, 2010 -----

----- SATURDAY, September 25, 2010 -----

----- Third Request For This Information -----

Now that we've aged a bit - we have a real need to know anyone who will be attending the Saturday night event who has special access needs to include handicapped parking. The whole event will take place in a one-story level floor building. Steps won't be a problem. If you have special access needs - let us know now so we can do our best to accommodate you. If you choose to remain silent, please understand that we have asked repeatedly for this information so that we can show you the courtesy of consideration. Absent your letting a committee person know, the assumption is that you need no special access provisions. Smoking - by law - will be outside the building. Please keep oxygen tanks away from the smoking area. You may submit your special needs request or just ask questions by going to http://www.tmes.biz/williamchrisman/classes/1965/classmate_submittal_form.shtml. I will inform the committee of your needs. Please send this to me before April 23 - the next meeting.

----- Next Planning Meeting -----

Next Reunion Planning Committee meeting is April 23, 2010, at Jeannie Sympson Halls.

----- Don't let the cost of a motel keep you away -----

Most pleased to let you know that at least two classmates are going to have an exceptional reunion this year. One from out of town and one nearby. Why? The one from out of town is hanging with their old best friend who is putting them up for the weekend.

----- Privacy and the 45th Reunion Memory Book -----

We have had several classmates request that their e-mail addresses NOT be published in the 45th Reunion Memory Book. This is no problem as long as we know that you do not want your e-mail address published. We need it and you know we use it so we can communicate using it rather than paying for printing and postage. Janet Babylon Fain just needs to know. So, now you know and we will assume your silence means that it is Okay to publish your e-mail address in the 45th Reunion Memory Book. Your call, not ours.

----- Cheryl Coffman -----

Cheryl finished up her last radiation treatment on Thursday, March 11, 2010 and then on Friday began her trip home to Tennessee. She swung by her daughter's place in Springfield to enjoy family and to break up the driving. Cheryl will be back in Kansas City the second week in April.

Cheryl says, "Many thanks and hugs to those who called, emailed, prayed, or just gave me a positive thought during my ordeal, especially the "worst reaction of chemo I've seen in over 40 years of practice", to quote one of my doctors. I'm sure you helped me pull thorough. Now to pass some follow-up tests in April and to keep viewing all this as a blessing. Looking forward to reunion to see you all again!
Hugs, Cheryl"

----- Anita Petrovic Fletchers grandson -----

Jonathon Fletcher, age 5 years old was admitted to Hospice House last Wednesday (Mar 3). Thank you for all classmates who have been praying for our grandson.

As of March 16 - Jon Jon was very sick about a week ago. The doctors decided to double his steroids from four to eight and he started eating again and could swallow much better. Our son informs us Jon Jon steroids can be increased up to twelve if needed. (Helps Jon Jon's breathing also, we are told.)

So we are happy to say he is doing better than he was since they increased his meds. David and Tina stay with Jon Jon 24/7---even took their dog for a few days. Some friend brought about five puppies and put them in bed with Jon Jon. What a smile he had. Me too!! Thank you all for your prayers. They are appreciated very much! God IS listening and answering for sure.
Sincerely, Anita Petrovic Fletcher and Larry

----- Ron McMillian -----

Nicci McMillian - Nicci will finish her last chemo treatment on March 25th and then 3 weeks later she will start 36 radiation treatments. Each of the 5 previous chemo treatments have been hard on her and she has had different side effects each time. She battles being tired all the time, but she is a trooper....she even acted like her old self and went to Westport for the St. Patrick Days festivities.....I have been home for a whole week and she is doing OK without me.

Ron has been working since January 28th.....he chases robots around Calmer's warehouse all day long.....he averages about 10 miles of walking a day and the only complaint that he has is not having Sunday as one of his days off.....
That's everything for right now. Barb

----- April 10 - Summa Relays -----

We need to get the word out to alum about the relays because we are going to rename the track after Coach Summa. I could use all the alum volunteers that want to work. They can get in contact with me here at school via e-mail.

Track Coach,

----- John Morrison -----

Hi, Cecil,

I received your message and plan to attend. I've written a novel and it was published last year. It's called Star Truck. Several classmates have read it and are bringing their copy to the reunion for me to autograph. Feel free to give our class the assignment to read the book and bring their copies for me to sign. I look forward to seeing you in September.

John

----- From Sandi Meyers -----

Subject: OK, here's a usable version of "Cruisin"
Date: Wednesday, March 10, 2010, 7:25 PM

For the early reunion, some of us participated in a project that was a fun thing and some of you may actually remember it. It started out with black and white film footage and then transitioned to a type of slide show featuring images of our high school pals. It had music background, too.

We were going through our wannabe film-maker days. Most of our projects, shoots, etc. included Tom Mueller, Paul Smith, Dean Gooden, Sam Montgomery, Jim Spaw (post high school friend), Doug Edwards, sometimes Jim and Doug Allen, and others.

Tom Mueller was the keeper of such things and for years, he kept the tin of 8 mm tape. He gave it to me when he got cancer. It was on his bucket list to have the old 8 mm tape saved. I found a guy who would try, so I took it to a place in Mission, KS, and they saved what they could and put on DVD. It had no sound, of course, but were able to preserve a few minutes of the project.

Tom couldn't wait to see what was left. But he got sick and was in ICU at KU Med. I had gone to see him on Thursday and told him "mission accomplished!" and I had the saved footage back in my hands. He was pretty sick but optimistic that by Saturday he'd be out of ICU.

So I headed back on Saturday with the DVD and a laptop and called ahead, asking the nurse how he was. She shocked me by saying "no visitors, per the family. He is now on palliative care." It hit me what this meant and I pulled off I-70 in the old Blue Ridge Mall area and sat and cried a bit. Turned down Sterling and cruised Independence in the rain for a while.

Back to the big project. The film started out with a goofy scene of a kid (jean shorts, white "Iskie Cams" tee shirt, black track shoes) leaving his house and getting in his 'vette, heading over to pick up his girlfriend. Paul Smith played the Truman High School guy and I played the flouncy girlfriend. So I run out in a pair of really short Bobbie Brooks shorts, jump in the 'vette and we went cruising Noland Road, got gas, etc.

The car was Bob Weller's old Corvette. We stopped off at Truman High and appear to be having a little girlfriend-boyfriend tiff. Then we make up and head on out for a typical Independence Saturday night. If I ever had any aspirations to be an actress, this "kiss and make up" scene convinced me I was not cut out for it. The "producer" and "director" of this film insisted we turn up the heat a bit. Paul and I were good pals from third grade but never a couple, so I recall saying "are you kidding? I have to pretend to be making out with Smith?" Paul thought it was pretty funny so he was cracking his typical jokes. Mueller and the "film crew" had to keep yelling at us "KEEP TO THE SCRIPT!" and to be serious and "conjure up some chemistry."

Off we go down Noland again. We pull up to the old 40-Highway Drive In, park beside the old concession stand, hook up the speakers. Suddenly, the trunk opens and a couple of stowaways (Tom Mueller is one,) jump out and runs off.

The rest of the tape is gone.

So that's what happened to that little film project. If we had been able to save the rest, you would have seen a zoom to the giant silver screen, then it transitions into a slide show, shuffling through tons of pics that we scanned from Mr. Clemons' journalism department collection and lots that Fast Eddie Edwards took, Tom took, Paul, too, and an artist friend of ours named Jim Spaw (who was the head photographer and a producer of the project).

And of course, we had music -- lots of old "fun fun fun before Daddy took the T-bird away" music.

I HATE that most of it was lost. It was a great effort.

This is a wonderful thing. Cancer really zaps your strength.

Cleaning for a reason:

If you know any women currently undergoing cancer treatments, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning -- once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment.

All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service.

http://www.cleaningforareason.orghttp://www.cleaningforareason.org/

Please pass this information on to bless a woman going through cancer.

This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women, and is seeking more.

It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.

----- Bobby Simkins -----

For those classmates who attended the joint sixtieth birthday party for Bob Bergin, Jeannie Sympson Hall and Marilyn Lewis Holsworth, you are aware of Bobby Simkins. Some of our class have become rather serious fans of Bobby. This local Elvis Tribute Artist, Bobby Simkins, has been chosen to perform in front of the judges for America's Got Talent at the end of April. The taped segment should air during the summer. More information will be shared as it becomes available.

----- Donna Middleton Staley -----

Donna Middleton Staley is the kind considerate individual who gives us all her time to edit these newsletters before you ever see them. Nobody knows how hard she works and few even know that without her efforts - what they sent in to include would be lost. Donna tracks these things and does her best to make sure all are included. So, thank you Donna Middleton Staley for all you do to make this newsletter readable and complete.

----- Classmates with no pictures in the Memory Book -----

Here is a list of Classmates listed in the last Memory Book with no picture. There are a thousand reasons why, but in this day and age we really have no excuse. If you have a photo of one of these folks, please scan it into JPEG format and e-mail it to us. Then, we can include their picture along with ours.
