William Chrisman coach John Vickers found out during the offseason exactly what the demands are of having two NCAA Division I players on your roster.
Tournaments from across the nation wanted the Bears to take part. What resulted is a crazy schedule that includes games in four states.
“We’ve had probably seven offers to play in different places in the country,” Vickers said. “It was kind of nice to have those opportunities, but we couldn’t do all of them.”
William Chrisman will play in the MaxPreps Tournament in San Diego over the Christmas holiday break and will also play a game against Milwaukee Lutheran in Wisconsin. Add that to the already busy schedule with the Hy-Vee Shootout, the Olathe South Tournament, the Rivalry Showdown at Municipal Auditorium, a tournament in Joplin and a game at Mizzou Arena, and it is going to be a crazy season.

Friends and family,
Well, last night we got off to a good start on the season. We had a
quadruple-header at Chrisman. All of our teams played at home against
Fort Osage.
The freshmen A and B played in the small gym before a packed house. I
don't know if I have ever seen more people at a freshman game before.
The A team had a rough go of it against an athletic and good Fort team.
The B team played a great game and led most of the way until the end
and lost by only 3. Both coaches were glad to see where they are as a
team and what they need to go back and work on in practice. We all feel
that way right now. That first game is a great measuring stick to see
where we are right now. One thing at the freshman level with what we
are trying to do with our system of play. For any player learning how
to play this way, the learning curve is huge and takes time and
patience. The good thing is that all of our players are getting a chance to
play and learn how to compete and play a role and try to improve
individually and as a team.
The sophomores played Fort Osage at 5 pm as part of a triple header in
the big gym. This team was coming off a tremendous come back 24 hours
earlier against Lee's Summit and they were ready to get after it again.
They clicked on all cylinders as they put the system to good use.
Again, everyone got to play, everyone contributed and everyone scored. The
effort they gave and the unselfishness and the execution of the
Grinnell system was so good. Coach Beets did a great job leading his team as
they finished it up by winning 92-60. Matt Lickey led the team with 16
points as Kyle Jackson and Jeremy Heffern chipped in 15 each.
The JV won a great battle with Fort Osage after the sophomore game was
over. At this point the gym was packed and was hot....perfect for
basketball. Coach Stacy and his team jumped on Fort from the tip. Fort
kept fighting back but Coach Stacy and his team kept the upper hand and
controlled the tempo wearing Fort Osage down and causing turnover after
turnover. It was a very physical game at times as Josh Yakovitz got
thrown to the floor and Trever Sifuentes broke his arm diving out of
bounds for a loose ball. But the Bears would not be denied as Jay
Rodriguez, jr. and new to Chrisman, led the way with 22. Mason McDaniels
contributed 13 and freshman Michael Losch added nine points, and freshmen
Chris PeGhee and Zach Dyer each had seven. Three players (Junior Jon
Zicarelli, junior Kyle Robison, and freshman Josh Yakovitz) added six
points in the total team effort.
It was a BIG night in the BIG gym for the William Chrisman Bears on
Tuesday against Fort Osage.
After wins by both the Sophomore and JV teams, the varsity squad
did its part, using a BIG fourth quarter to pull away for a 91-71 victory
against the Indians.
Up by only four to start the fourth, the Bears run-and-gun stylings
wore down Fort Osage. The Bears, fresh because of subbing a fresh unit
of five players every minute, outscored the Indians 34-18 to clinch the
victory.
Early on, though, the Indians gave the Bears all they could handle.
Fort Osage built an 8-point first-quarter lead and the Bears did not
get the lead until senior MyShodde Miller broke free for a lay-up with
only two seconds left in the quarter.
For the next two quarters, the Bears and Indians fought. Each time
the Bears seemed like they were about to pull away, the Indians fought
back.
That, however, changed in the fourth quarter. Thanks to a small
change in the defense and some timely shooting by Miller and sophomore
Justin Clark, the Bears began to pull away.
The Bears style, adopted from Grinnell (Iowa) College, forced 46
turnovers. It also allowed the Bears to put up 85 shots. While they were
off from behind the arc, making only 12-of-51, they made up for it from
inside. Chrisman made 23-of-34 2point field goals, with Miller
accounting for nine of them. Miller also made three 3-pointers. He finished
with a career-high 28 points.
Clark was off his mark early, but he was there when it was needed,
scoring 10 fourth quarter points. Clark made four 3-pointers and
finished with 22 points.
Three seniors also played big roles. Josh Bennett scored 9 points,
Andy Horner scored 7, and Eric Edwards also added 7. Edwards also took
four charges.
The Bears next game is Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Liberty.
The Bears have Wednesday and Thursday off to be with family for the
Thanksgiving holiday and will be back to practice on Friday and Saturday.
Check in at the Bears website to get the lates up-to-date information
as well as read about players, coaches, practice and game schedules, see
pictures and more. http://eteamz.active.com/wchsbearsbasketball/
We would like to wish all of you a safe and blessed Thanksgiving and
hope to see you at Liberty on Nov. 28. We need your Bear pride and
spirit there!!!
Coach Vickers and the Bears
I forgot to let you know that Regi Durr, sr., dislocated his shoulder
early in last night's game. We are not sure of his prognosis at this
time but will keep you posted.
We also had a number of former players in attendance last night as they
were home on break from college:
Ramon McDaniels - '05, freshman basketball player at Mt. Aloysius (NCAA
DIII in Pennsylvania)
Mike Richardson - '05, freshman basketball player at Mt. Aloysius (NCAA
DIII in Pennsylvania)
Kyle Lee - '05, freshman basketball player at Graceland University
(NAIA DII in Iowa)
Jason Clark - '05, freshman track, high jump, Johnson County Comm.
College (Overland Park, KS)
Sean Casey - '05, freshman, community college
Old timer former Bears in attendance :0)
Bob Martin - WC basketball alum, class of '84
Robert Jensen - WC basketball alum, class of '85
I am sorry if I missed any of you other old timers last night. That
place was packed!!!
Friends and Family,
Tonight is the Bears’ home opening game versus Fort Osage. The Freshmen play here at 5pm in the little gym. The Sophomores play at 4pm, the JV plays at 5pm and the Varsity plays at 7:30pm. All teams play Fort Osage.
The sophomores tipped off the season last night at Lee’s Summit. After a rocky start (the guys were down 26 points with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter) the boys decided to make a run and things started working for them. They began to get steals, easy buckets off turnovers, hit some shots and began chopping into the lead. Coach Beets said the team never gave up and momentum built as the system began to really get into gear. With one minute left the Bears had stormed back to take a 3 point lead. Folks, that is a 29 point turn around in thirteen minutes, pretty amazing. The sophomores ended up losing by three after an incredible effort and comeback. It showed them that if they run the system that they can do amazing things in a short amount of time and that no lead is insurmountable. Needless to say, they are very excited about playing tonight.
We hope to see many of you tonight and we want to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe and blessed time as you see family and friends over the next few days.
Coach Vickers
Added comment by Robie Mathews:

Newsletter
Dear Friends and Family of Bear Basketball, This email newsletter is to update you on what is going on in William Chrisman Bears Basketball. Most of you know we have done this from time to time since late summer and will be able to do it more often now that basketball season is about to start.
Before we get into it, we would like to encourage you to visit our basketball team's website. It contains a lot of valuable information and is updated regularly. It will be updated after each game this season and you can read about favorite players, coaches, records the Bears set last season, directions to games, Bear history, see pictures, video(soon) and get updated on former Bear players who are currently playing in college. Add the web address to your FAVORITES list:

Our preseason went very well. We averaged 35 players showing up to condition, lift weights and play at open gym. We feel the players, at this point, are in better shape than where we were at the same time last year. They especially enjoyed the elimination of Miracle Mile Fridays. That was replaced with a new conditioning version called Freaky Friday which was a creative coaching concoction of conditioning every Friday and every Friday was different. We just finished our first week of practice and had 72 try out. We still have not gotten about 10-12 football players because they have won the district and are now preparing to advance in the playoffs. We congratulate Coach Spotts, his staff and team and wish them well. They are on a roll right now and next face Park Hill at Park Hill next Friday night. Practice went well this week and the guys are excited to get the season started. We are far ahead this year compared to last year in regards to teaching our system of play. All the players and coaches feel more comfortable and experienced after the momentous change we all went through last year. We feel like that experience is going to benefit us tremendously this year. We will have some new faces at each level this year and can't wait for you to see these young men on the court. You may also get a preview of them once they are put on the team website. One of our new faces hails from Germany. His name is Leon Haenel. He played soccer for Chrisman this fall and is now ready to play what he calls his favorite sport, basketball. We also have a volunteer coach, Clay Discher, who played in high school against the Bears when he attended North Kansas City High School. He then played two years for William Jewell College. He is a fine young man and we are glad to have him around to help our players and staff. This fall we have had a chance to go to the University of Missouri to watch practice and spend time with the coaching staff there. The Tigers will run a version of what our team does and we were interested in picking up some nuggets that we might be able to implement with our team in practice or in games. The new Tiger staff has been very friendly and accommodating. One of the coaches had even heard of our team and what we do and had plenty of questions about our style of play. Pretty interesting and somewhat flattering. We would like to remind you of our Intrasquad Game which will be Saturday night, November 18 at 6pm in the gym. It is free and it will be fun. All of our boys teams will get some court time and we will have some games and prizes for fans to be a part of during the evening. Come on out and get a preview of this year's teams. Finally, a little news about a former Bear basketball player. Ethan Shull, '99 grad, is now a politician. He is involved in the city government of East Lynne, Missouri as South Ward Alderman. Wow! Who knows what could be next? Remember, send us names and email addresses of others you think would like to be getting this email newsletter about Bear Basketball. We especially want to add alumni basketball players to this list. Thanks for your continued support and we will see you soon. Coach Vickers and the Bears Staff

Dear Friends,
The Bears have now completed the first month of pre-season conditioning, weight lifting and playing at open gym. There have been an average of 35 boys involved who are not participating in a fall sport. The coaching staff has heard from over 90 boys who plan on trying out for basketball when practice begins October 30.
Recently, the Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association held its coaching clinic and sign-up night. University of Missouri basketball coach, Mike Anderson, was one of the guest speakers at the clinic. He talked about his Run and Execute system of basketball he is bringing to Missouri which is similar to what our team does. It was very interesting to hear many of the similarities and some of the differences our two programs have. Coach Anderson showed some game footage of how his system worked at UAB. It looked very familiar to the Bears coaching staff who attended the clinic. As Coach Anderson said, “It is a very different way to play basketball but a very fun way to play, fun to watch for the fans and fun to coach from the sidelines.” We could not agree more!!!!
On a different note, we would like to sincerely thank a couple of life-long Bears basketball fans and supporters of the program who donated a used car to one of our former student-athlete basketball players who is now away at college. This sacrifice and contribution to this young man’s life is going to help him and his family through a tough situation and will help him in getting to class on campus, getting to a job off-campus, getting home to visit, getting to practice, etc. Your support, care and sacrifice are appreciated!!!!
Again, we look forward to seeing you and communicating with you this season. We are interested in getting as many people as possible on this newsletter list. So, if you know of anyone who might be interested, please send us their first and last name and their email address and we will add them. We are especially interested in getting former Chrisman basketball players and other alums.
We also want to remind you to visit our team website which has been updated again. You will find a lot of interesting things there about Bears Basketball. Add it to your favorites list. http://eteamz.active.com/wchsbearsbasketball/
Finally, we want to congratulate one of our players, junior guard Spencer Harris, who was just named a McCoy Medal Award winner. This award is given to the Top 50 students of the junior class according to GPA.
We look forward to hearing from you and any feedback you may have. Basketball is just around the corner!!!
Yours in basketball,
Coach Vickers and the Bears staff
Subject: WC Basketball Newsletter
Good Morning to everyone,
We have gotten very positive feedback about having this newsletter to keep all informed on the happenings of Bear Basketball. My special thanks goes out to all of you who have responded and we are glad to have new people on board as well. A special note of thanks to Coach Larry Holley at William Jewell College . Coach Holley was my college basketball coach after my days at William Chrisman and he gave me the idea to begin this newsletter. I only hope we can come close to what he does with his for the Cardinal Basketball Family.
Again, we would like to invite you to email us with other people who might be interested in getting updates and information about Bear Basketball. Just email us their names and email addresses and we will add them to the list. We would especially like to re-establish contact with Bear alumni and former Bear basketball players. Please let us know.
The Bears have begun pre-season workouts this week with open gym, weight room work and conditioning. Needless to say, we have a lot of sore boys right now walking the halls of William Chrisman. It is hard to believe but we are not too far away from basketball season. The first practice of the year is October 30.
We are also happy to report that the Bears now have their own basketball website. Coach Stacy, Andrew Gray (senior) and Craig Stoll (senior) have worked very hard to create this site. The season hasn’t even begun and it is full of great information. The site will be updated regularly and fans will find it very informative and useful. We will be posting updated stats from games and we will also be posting video highlights from games. College coaches will be able to go to our site and view uploaded video footage of our players as well. We want to invite you to go to the site and click on all the various headings to see what is there about Bear Basketball. Please add our basketball website to your favorites list and visit it often. Here is the site, just click on it and you will be taken there. www.eteamz.active.com/wchsbearsbasketball
Let us know what you think of the site!!!! We invite your feedback to this newsletter and the website.

Hello Friends and Family of Bear Basketball,
Most of you who are receiving this newsletter know that the basketball program is going to begin communicating with you about the Bears Basketball Program. We want as many people who might be interested in getting information about the team to get on the list. So, if you know of other Chrisman alums or others who might be interested, please send us their names, email addresses or other ways to contact them so they might be able to be on the list.
Part of the information we put on here will be to utilize our relationships with people and the community to help our student-athletes. It definitely takes more than teachers and coaches to help our young people today!!
This brings me to a couple of opportunities that have arisen for someone out there to help out a couple of our fellow Bears. One of our current senior players is in a Marketing class at Chrisman. Part of his credit for this class is to have a job and work a certain amount of hours during the week. He is looking for something local that might be in something other than food service that would perhaps be understanding of his school and basketball schedule. If anyone has a contact, please reach me ASAP. Email or call 816-628-5152.
The other opportunity is for a former player in our program who is now in college nearby. He is in need of a vehicle to get to and from campus and to and from his home here in Independence. He is currently having to desperately search for ways to get to campus from his apartment and to get home on the weekends. If anyone knows of a cheap but dependable vehicle we might find for him, please contact me ASAP. Email or call 816-628-5152.
These are two opportunities to help a couple of fine young men, a current Bear and a former Bear. Could you help out?
Now for a few updates:
2002 WC Bears: John Davenport is beginning his final year at William Jewell College and is healthy and cleared to play basketball again after some major knee issues and a broken thumb the last two seasons, BJ Surry, after sitting out a year after Jacksonville University, has been accepted at William Jewell and will be completing his final year of eligibility playing for the Cardinals with his good friend and high school teammate, John Davenport. Marquise Lewis, a high school teammate of John and BJ, is finishing his final semester at Ottawa University and his final year of eligibility in basketball there. Matt Habermehl, high school teammates of John, BJ and Marquise, is in his final year at Missouri Southern in Joplin and figures to play a major role on his basketball team in the very competitive MIAA, Division II basketball league. JR Wells, high school teammate to all these players, is completing his education degree at UMKC and will join the WC Bears staff this year as an assistant coach. JR also recently became engaged. JR is filling the void left by Rachel Bradberry, former WC girl's basketball player and assistant boys coach last year, who is now the head girl's varsity basketball coach at Lone Jack High School. Rachel also just got married to former Bears player, Nate Donaldson.
2005 WC Bears: Jeff Ivory has returned for his sophomore basketball season at Otero Junior College in Colorado. Ben Kisner has returned to Lindenwood University in St. Louis for his sophomore football season.
2006 WC Bears: Jason Clark is a freshman at Johnson County Community College on scholarship to high jump, Kyle Lee is a freshman at Graceland and will play basketball there, Mike Richardson and Ramon McDaniels are freshman at NCAA Div. III Mount Aloysius in Pennsylvania and will play basketball there. They are also roommates.
CoachTerry Parker, Physical Education teacher and longtime coach at WC, will return to the Bears staff this year as assistant varsity coach. Coach Parker has coached basketball at Chrisman 17 of his 19 years. The Bears are thrilled to have his experience and character on the staff. He will be a tremendous asset to our program.
The Bears had a basketball meeting last week for all those interested in playing basketball this year who are not involved in a fall sport. Forty-six young men showed up to meet the staff and get information about the upcoming pre-season workouts.
Coach Stacy, assistant Bears coach, recently read on MOSPORTS.COM that the Bears were mentioned as one of four teams in the KC metro area as a "must see" team this year. The Bears were mentioned along with Rockhurst, Raytown South and Paseo.
The Bears continue to have positive feedback after hosting a national coaches clinic on the Run and Gun style of play the Bears implemented last season. Over 50 men's and women's high school and college coaches attended the clinic last spring from all over the United States. Many high school and college coaches who have heard about the clinic have contacted the Bears staff with questions about the system of play and have requested a copy of the DVD that was filmed of the clinic.
